Explore Davao | The Most Used Greetings


If you're from Manila or other part of the country or the world and you're new to a certain place, learning few local dialects is a must. One of my Davao's first impression, unless you look like a foreigner or you're with a tourist guide, the locals will treat you as a local. This means, unless you tell them "tagalog or english lang po" they will for sure speak to you in Bisaya first.

The local dialect in Davao City is Bisaya or Cebuanong Bisaya. No need to learn the entire "bisaya" language because what people in the city normally speak is a mix of Bisaya and Tagalog. 

If you're new here, let me tell you, knowing the basic Bisaya words will help you go around the city with convenience.

Here are some local terminologies that you may want to learn (will add more accordingly):

Maayong buntag -- Good morning.
Maayong hapon -- Good afternoon.
Maayong gabi-i -- Good evening.
Good morning to you all! - Maayong buntag kaninyo nga tanan
Good afternoon to you all! - Maayong hapon kaninyo nga tanan
Good evening to you all! - Maayong gabi-i kaninyo nga tanan
Ayo - Anyone home or Knock Knock (Tao po)
Ayo-ayo -- Take care.
Tagpila ni? -- How much is this?

Unsa? - Why? 
Kambio - Fare Change (sukli)
Asa ang...? -- Where is...(name of place)?
Lugar Lang - Stop (para sa tabi)
Palihog- Please/Asking for favor (Pakiusap, paabot) 
Adto ta didto -- Let's go there.
Gikan - From (galing sa)
Baktas ta -- Let's walk.
Uli na ta -- Let's go home.
Mangaon na ta -- Let's eat.
Lami kaayo -- Very delicious (refers to food).
Nindot ang lugar -- The place is beautiful.
Palit ta ani -- Let's buy this.
Asa puede mosakay-----? -- Where can we ride a _________?
Maayo man - I'm good
Kasabot ka? - Do you understand?
Gihigugma ko ikaw/ Gihigugma tikaw - I love you
Palangga ko ikaw/ Palangga tikaw- I care for you
